State of Data in the Music Industry 2023

This research report delves into key data trends for 2023 and beyond. Our team at Music Tomorrow has been working at the forefront of music & data for almost a decade. Throughout the years, we've seen music data analytics turn from a few passion projects run by some of the forward-thinking music executives into one of the fastest-growing subsets of the B2B music business.

Today, businesses across the music industry consider data analytics among the most prominent growth drivers. Yet, up to this point, there were no attempts at structuring this subset of the music business. This was our primary goal when launching our annual State of Data in the Music Industry Report in 2021: assess the level of data proficiency in the music industry and create a record of exactly how and why music professionals engage with data.

To that end, throughout Q2 2022, we surveyed music professionals from all over the music business. In this report, we'll share the results of that survey — covering all three of the major labels and numerous indies, publishers, distributors, CMOs, music tech companies, and more — as well as our reflection on the state of music data in 2022.

This year's survey uncovered many exciting insights into the current state of data tools and practices in the music business and some of the bigger powers at play. We hope you find our report a helpful guide on your data analytics journey.
